Where Matter Fears To Tread

Mammoplasty

The earliest sculptures in the Western world date back twenty-five to forty thousand years ago and depict fat, voluptuous women with wide hips and generous breasts. According to archaeologists and paleontologists, these depict the Cro-Magnon image of the Great Mother.

Fast forward to the Hellenistic Age, and the women depicted in marble have much smaller breasts. In recent times as far as what is considered ideal, the pendulum has swung back and forth repeatedly. Today, there are at least as many women seeking breast enlargement as there are those seeking breast reduction, or mammoplasty. The major difference is that while the former group generally has self-esteem issues over their breast size, the latter group may have reasons that go beyond cosmetic considerations.

One of the most important reasons for a woman to undergo a breast reduction procedure is her health. Excessively large breasts add weight to the chest region that can cause severe strain and result in chronic lower back pain as well as shoulder and neck discomfort and even headaches. Respiratory and cardio-vascular problems are also not unusual.

There is of course the cosmetic consideration as well; a woman whose breasts have begun to sag or become droopy because of aging, sudden weight loss or excessive nursing may be seeking breast reconstruction.

The techniques used in breast reduction surgery may also be of help for men who suffer from a common, yet relatively unknown condition known as gynecomastia, or female [man] breasts. This condition, while non-life threatening, can have severe psychological ramifications. The doctors at PPSKC are not in the mental health field (though we can refer patients to mental health professionals if appropriate); however, they do offer a number of surgical options that can correct the physical manifestations of this particular disorder.

Although you won’t know whether or not mammoplasty is a good solution for you until you actually have an initial consultation with one of our surgeons, you should know that the procedure is heartily endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration as good medicine – and that overwhelmingly, breast reduction patients express the most satisfaction with the results of their procedure of any who undergo reconstructive or cosmetic surgery.

If you are in good health overall and have realistic expectations, chances are good that you will benefit from mammoplasty.
