Careless driving costs bus driver his job, tribunal agrees

Mr. Pankaj Mohan working as a bus driver for Travel West Midlands for almost 25 years, who felt he had been sacked unfairly by his employer has had his case thrown out by the Employment Tribunal.

The incident occurred after the driver took a wrong route and the bus crashed into a low bridge on Attleborough Road, Nuneaton. There was only one commuter in the double-decker bus at the time of the crash, but unfortunately she was seated at the front of the upper deck. The passenger was being driven to the Nuneaton train station. The passenger claims she went into a state of shock after she almost lost her life in the crash. The bus was eventually freed by Emergency fire crews.

Birmingham Employment Tribunal, after hearing all the arguments decided that the company had sufficient grounds to sack Mr. Mohan, and hence agreed with the action taken by Travel West Midlands against their employee.

The crash had caused damages to the tune of £15,000. Mr. Mohan acknowledged his mistake but felt he had been served a raw deal as one of his colleagues having caused a similar incident, had kept his job with the company. Coventry Depot Director, Bernard Delaney, confirmed that fact but informed the tribunal that the other employee was retained on compassionate grounds as he had just gone through a divorce and was preoccupied when the accident occurred.
